Mission

The Neighborhood Theatre Project creates opportunities for community building, reflection, and dialogue. Together with local communities, we engage an emergent process grounded in theatrical methodologies to weave personal stories into a shared narrative and catalyze conversations between neighbors.

Vision

We believe that the act of sharing personal stories contributes to engaged and thriving communities. By choosing curiosity over judgment, attending with care to different lived experiences, and striving to know our neighbors, we reimagine how to relate to one another on a local level and discover how our neighborhoods can nurture a world that celebrates the abundance within our shared humanity.

Values

We embrace curiosity.

We invite participants, collaborators, and audiences to join us in approaching stories with an openness to consider unfamiliar perspectives, challenge learned assumptions, and explore unexpected connections.

We trust in emergence.

We start by asking open-ended questions. We allow the central themes, narrative, and shape of each project to develop and adapt in response to the discoveries made together with participants and collaborators.

We prioritize care.

We establish a people-centered working environment, starting with group agreements and attention to access needs. We build trust by adapting the approach, team, and structure of each project to the needs and assets of our partner community.

We seek abundance.

We build collaborative spaces with a diversity of identities, lived experiences, and expertise to create work that uplifts expansive thinking, nurtures imagination, and is authentically representative of our neighborhoods.

History

In 2016, the mission for The Neighborhood Theatre Project began to take shape. NTP was born out of a desire to create greater access to theatre through verbatim storytelling.

We were curious to explore how the process of making a play about a neighborhood through interviews, conversations, and storytelling with the people who live there, might expand participation and access to theatre.

We are heavily invested in the unique opportunities verbatim theatre-making offers to engage participants and audiences: to listen and connect with fellow neighbors through stories, and to experience one’s own story told onstage.

Since our founding, we have focused on intentional and emergent growth. NTP continues to engage new artists, community partners, and participants, exploring how to use theatre as a tool for community building and engagement.
